Lawmakers Reach Deal For Legal Recreational Marijuana in NJ

The Garden State could become the next state to legalize recreational marijuana use under a deal stricken by state lawmakers. State Sen. Nichalos Scutari said that Governor Phil Murphy and state assembly leaders have come to agreements on portions of a proposal to legalize pot. Sticking points for the deal included a by-the-ounce tax on marijuana and an authority to regulate sales.

Scutari told News 4 that a bill will be written over the next few days. Then it could come to a vote as early as next month. If for some reason the bill fails, Scutari said legislative leaders are prepared to let voters decide in a November referendum. News of the deal comes the same day as a Monmouth University poll found that more than 60 percent of New Jerseyans tallied supported marijuana legalization.
